Only let qualified members take out a boat
Define your club’s own sign-offs, award them to members, and require the right ones before anyone can check out or book a given class of boat — so competence, not chance, decides who goes on the water.
Your sign-offs, your rules
Create the competencies your club uses — steerage, single-scull, cox, wet-exit, huli recovery, swim test — with no fixed list imposed on you.
Gate check-out & booking
Mark a competency as “blocking” and members can’t take out or book that class of boat until it’s signed off by a coach or admin.
Swim test or lifejacket
Set advisory “warn” competencies — e.g. a swim test — so members without it are reminded to wear a lifejacket rather than being stopped.
Per boat class & expiry
Require different sign-offs for a single vs an eight or an OC6, and set re-test expiry dates so lapsed competencies show up automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Competencies are entirely club-defined, so kayak, canoe and outrigger clubs set their own — wet exit, water-grade, huli recovery — using the same system. Editable starter templates per sport get you going fast.
Coaches and admins award competencies to members from the Members page. Each grant records who signed it off and when, with an optional expiry.
If a required sign-off is missing, the check-out or booking is blocked with a clear message naming what’s needed. Advisory competencies show a warning instead.
